    About the only place the running ground is used in Ct is when doing transmission work or when running the messenger for spacer cable all new conductor is usually tree wire/spacer cable. The Hubble type is preferred method,tying all grds together and going to system neutral also preferred, but because of lack of knowledge on the part of supervision and trying to save a buck don't always have grd mat Co. says ok to stand on rubber blanket on top of piece of plastic, insulate isolate ?

    We have a generally accepted practice around here regarding grounding and bonding of equipment for stringing . Ground gradient mats under the tensioner with double barrier fencing. Machines grounded to the system neutral( when possible), conductor grounded with a reel ground and maybe a travelling ground(depending on type of conductor). Travellers grounded at first, last , before and after any live crossing and somewhere between every 5 to 7 spans. Do you get your conductor on steel or wooden reels?

    The reel trailer is grounded,the Wire is grounded with a Hubble rotating ground attached on the very end of the wire coming out of the wood reel that is bolted to the reel shaft.Then another ground is attached to the same rotating Hubble reel bearing that rotates on the reel shaft which is connected to the system neutral.We do not use mats,just rubber gloves and stay isolated from reel.The tensioner on the other end is grounded also,breaker one shot.When the wire reaches its destination its ground as we go till all are pulled in and grounded.Sagging is done on the least hazardous end.If its a long pull then we will ground again accordingly in the middle or just rubber glove tying the conductor in.

    I really don't understand why mats are not used when tension stringing over or near energized conductors. Doesn't take that much longer to back the tension trailer on to the mat and set up a proper EPZ, the only safe way to eliminate step and touch potential, especially when you have to change reels and sleeve onto the wire already strung in.

    Default Use a grounding block at your takeoff.

    You are aloud to use a grounded block at your take off in lieu of a rolling ground. At the dead end you can go under the hazard if hot primary and protect the guys on the wire cart. When we had a broken rolling ground, that's doing the same thing. As long as a ground is installed between the brake over and the cart. If it's just a three phase primary pole, it's the same thing as a traveling ground. Except the bomb of phase to ground is going to happen at the block not near the wire cart.

    The reality is the only way to really protect the men if sh*t hits the fan at the tensioner (wire end) is to set up a proper EPZ with mats and proper bonding, anything less is just a false sense of security. You don't want the fault clearing at the tension machine you just want everything staying at the same potential while the fault clears.
