Here is an editorial from Jan of 2010 from the Wahington Post.....I like what the man has to say......he doesnt appear to be a big fan of Pres. Obamas but gives credit where credit is due....the first section being the one I agree with the most.........Things are still not good.....but they could sure as hell be a lot worse, and when he came into office sure seemed like we were heading into the "lot worse" category. I am sure he knew he was going into a "no win" situation, no matter what he did, when he came into office. I wouldnt want that job.
In Obama's first year, successes outweigh missteps

On Wednesday one year (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/special/politics/obama-year-one/) will have passed since President Obama's inauguration (http://voices.washingtonpost.com/inauguration-central/). Much of the tidal wave of assessments has been negative: Falling poll numbers (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/01/16/AR2010011602828.html). Unfulfilled promises. Disappointed supporters, disillusioned independents, angry opponents. He's been too cool or too egotistical, too left-wing or not left-wing enough. And if voters repudiate his policies in a special Massachusetts Senate election (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/01/17/AR2010011702034.html) on Tuesday, as is quite possible, the tidal wave will become a tsunami.

So before that happens, I'd like to interrupt the anniversary-bash-Obama-fest with a simple proposition: Obama has done a good job so far.
I've had my share of complaints. I harbor my share of misgivings. But on the issues that mattered most in his first year, Obama got things right.
Begin with something that didn't happen: financial collapse and great depression.
It's easy to forget, but Obama came into office facing a frightening situation. He assembled in short order an extremely competent economic team and took -- or, in many cases, continued -- the drastic measures needed to stave off disaster. And those measures succeeded.
White House political aides knew that, no matter what they did, the economy would still be reeling one year later and that Obama would be unfairly blamed. They knew that little credit would be awarded for jobs that weren't lost or bankruptcies that were averted, and little credit has been. But credit is due.
The other primary responsibility facing a president is to keep the country safe, and there, too, Obama has gotten things mostly right. He again assembled, through judicious retention and new hires, a solid team, and for the most part it has shaped reasonable policies to defend against terrorism.
You could wish that his support for Iraq (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/world/specials/iraq/) weren't accompanied by such teeth-gritting reluctance. You might have hoped that his commitment to Afghanistan (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/special/afghanistan-pakistan/index.html) would come with less public ambivalence. But in both cases, he has put national interest ahead of political consideration and committed the United States to success. He has assigned skilled generals to the missions, given them adequate resources and set reasonable goals.
http://media3.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/hp/img/ad_label_leftjust.gif

At the same time, he has restored a balance between security and liberty in his handling of terrorists and alleged terrorists. He was right to end abusive treatment of detainees; he was right also to reject an ACLU mind-set in their handling.
Inevitably, in such a minefield of complex moral questions and simpleminded political demagoguery, he's made choices I disagree with. But he has sent a clear message to other nations that the United States is committed to its values and its self-defense, and he's gone a long way toward backing up both with his actions.
In my book, reasonable success in these two broad areas would be enough to earn more than a passing grade for a first, turbulent year. But -- and even setting aside the now uncertain prospects of health-care reform (http://voices.washingtonpost.com/health-care-reform/) -- there's been more.
Obama has acted, within budget constraints, on his promises to make college more affordable, and he has taken small but promising steps to bring new thinking and more accountability to the schooling of poor children. He named and won confirmation for a well-qualified Supreme Court justice (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/08/06/AR2009080601706.html). He returned climate change (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/special/climate-change/) to the center of national debate and executive policymaking. And from Cairo (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/06/04/AR2009060401117.html) to Oslo (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/video/2009/12/10/VI2009121001419.html), and now to Haiti (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/special/world/haiti-earthquake/index.html), he has sought to chart a path for America between arrogance and isolationism, neither denying nor boasting about the burdens of global leadership.
In each of these policy areas, there were shortcomings and missteps, and I reserve the columnist's right to resume criticizing them as soon as the second year gets under way. The extent to which Obama can stand up to Democratic interest groups remains a worry: Why is tort reform missing from his health-care legislation, and trade enlargement from his economic policy? He's put off a lot of tough choices, on the budget and in other fields.
But other tough choices have come rushing at him, and in most cases he's chosen well. It's worth picking up our heads from the latest poll and even from the Senate election, at least for a moment or two, to acknowledge as much.

That the was topic of the editorial..........just what Steve said......he stopped the economic collapse of this country, with all his unpopular spending......If he did nothing else this whole term, the fact that he held this economy that was teetering on the brink of disaster.....a disaster he didnt create......from taking a complete nose dive to the bottom of barrel. I have never stood in a soup line, or piled on clothes to keep warm, worried about being kicked out of my home, etc etc, nor do I ever want to .....I wonder how close we were to that scenario. What the hell am I thinkin.....the republicans would have some to save the economy........with their overt concern for everything that is common and everday, they would have made sure changes were made to stabilize the economy, that I am sure would have trickled down to Main Street....after all we all know "****" runs downhill.

Republican House leader John Boehner laid out the Republican world view (http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/news/s_688102.html) in an interview with a friendly reporter at the Pittsburgh Post Gazette.
Boehner defended the big banks from reform, arguing that the finanical reform bill was like "killing an ant with a nuclear weapon." His comments came as Republican Senators Scott Brown and Susan Collins announced that they might oppose the financial reform bill because it levied fees on the big banks to pay for its cost.
Who should pay? Boehner gave some indication, arguing that in order to have enough money to pay for the war in Afghanistan, the Congress should RAISE THE RETIREMENT AGE TO 70, and cut Social Security across the board. From the article:
"Ensuring there’s enough money to pay for the war will require reforming the country’s entitlement system, Boehner said. He said he’d favor increasing the Social Security retirement age to 70 for people who have at least 20 years until retirement, tying cost-of-living increases to the consumer price index rather than wage inflation and limiting payments to those who need them."
Wall Street wrecks the economy, but shouldn't be taxed to pay for the cost of reform. BP is victim of a "shakedown." And now the one Obama policy Republcans support -- escalation in Afghanistan -- should be paid for by the elderly -- raising the retirement age and cuttng Social Security.
If Republicans win the majority of the House, the perpetually tanned John Boehner will become Speaker. Hard to envision that.

Sharron Angle floated possibility of armed insurrection

Here's another one that could be tough for Sharron Angle (http://www.whorunsgov.com/Profiles/Sharron_Angle) to explain away: In an interview in January, Angle appeared to float the possibility of armed insurrection if "this Congress keeps going the way it is."
I'm not kidding. In an interview she gave to a right-wing talk show host (http://voices.washingtonpost.com/plum-line/100114%20Angle%20on%20Lars%20Larson%20-%20Second%20Amendment%20Remedies.mp3), Angle approvingly quoted Thomas Jefferson saying it's good for a country to have a revolution every 20 years -- and said that if Congress keeps it up, people may find themselves resorting to "Second Amendment remedies."
What's more, the talk show host she spoke to tells me he doesn't have any doubt that she was floating the possibility of armed insurrection as a valid response if Congress continues along its current course.
Asked by the host, Lars Larson of Portland, Oregon, where she stands on Second Amendment issues, Angle replied:

You know, our Founding Fathers, they put that Second Amendment in there for a good reason and that was for the people to protect themselves against a tyrannical government. And in fact Thomas Jefferson said it's good for a country to have a revolution every 20 years. I hope that's not where we're going, but, you know, if this Congress keeps going the way it is, people are really looking toward those Second Amendment remedies and saying my goodness what can we do to turn this country around? I'll tell you the first thing we need to do is take Harry Reid out.
Larson says Angle was floating the possibility of armed insurrection if Congress keeps it up under Reid et al.
"If it continues to do the things it's doing, I think she's leaving open that possibility," Larson said. "And I think the founders believed that the public should be able to do that when the government becomes out of control. It just matters what you define as going too far."

The most charitable interpretation here was that Angle was floating armed insurrection -- or "Second Amendment remedies" -- as a defensible response if electoral politics fails to change where things are headed under the current regime.
Also, the larger context is key: TPM reports this morning (http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/06/sharron-angle-and-the-independent-american-party.php?ref=fpa) that Angle was a member of the far-right Independent American Party, a pro-gun, states-rights party that warns against the threat of global government.
She has also said (http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/06/reid-opponent-embraces-patriot-group-that-warns-of-giant-concentration-camps.php) she's a member of the patriot group "Oath Keepers," though she's since disavowed that bunch.
