I decided to renew my drivers license this week and what a night mare that chore has become. There are new Federal Guidelines that the States must follow:
Effective December 31, 2009 federal regulations require anyone applying for a new, renewal, or duplicate driver license or identification card will have to provide the following documents listed below :
I . You will need one Identity Document. NOTE: If your name is different than the name on your identity document, you will need to bring additional proof of your legal name. Acceptable documents for proof of a legal name change are a certified marriage certificate (issued by a state vital records agency), a certified adoption document, or a certified court order authorizing a name change (such as a divorce decree). If you have had multiple marriages, you will need to bring similar documents providing legal proof of each name change.
An Identity Document to prove identity, date of birth, and lawful status is considered to be one of the following:
Certified U.S. birth certificate issued by State or County (hospital birth certificates are not acceptable)
Valid unexpired U.S. passport
Certificate of Naturalization
Certificate of Citizenship
Valid unexpired permanent resident card
Valid unexpired employment authorization document
Foreign passport with valid unexpired U.S. Visa with I-94
II . You will need one document to prove Social Security number. Only the documents listed below can serve as proof of Social Security number (document must include your full social security number):
Social Security card
W-2 Form
SSA 1099 Form
Non-SSA 1099 Form
III . You will need two documents to prove your residential address. A parent's proof of address is acceptable for a minor child. Please bring two of the documents listed below (each must contain your current address):
Utility bill
Credit card statement
Pay stub or earnings statement
Rent receipt
Phone bill
Transcript or report card from an accredited school
Bank statement
Mortgage document
Tax document
Homeowners/renter's insurance policy
Other items will be reviewed by licensing personnel
PO Box addresses are acceptable in areas not assigned a street or 911 addresses
Ok, I just happen to have my County Birth Certificate for number 1 so that saved me some time for my Identity Document, I have my original S.S. Card so I could prove my S.S. number and I do get all my mail at a P.O. box but my Utility bill and tax document have my residency on them. So I felt fairly good that I should have every thing but it pissed me off I had to be carrying all these documents and that they where not in the safe.
Tuesday morn I went to the DMV and they had a lady checking that everyone has the right documentation. Well guess what they did not accept my Social Security card because it was red and not the new blue ones. I was informed it takes two weeks to get a new one, but was told what other documents I could use. I was so flustered I did not go back until today.
I now was using a 1099 to prove my S.S. #, and that passed. So I next get to the lady issuing me my new license. Well the Utility Bill was off in her opinion in my street address. So I then made a trip to the Power Co. office and had them make the correction.
I have never felt so much like I was receiving a government harassment in my life and that we are losing our freedoms. When I was done both gals where standing there and what I said they knew I was serious. After today I know exactly how Joesph and Mary felt when they had to go and be registered by the Roman government.
You guys have to know my county is only 4000 people and I know everyone, yet I had to go through all these hoops to renew my license. This is how tiny it is, back in the eighties the sheriff arrested me and was booking me into jail. I asked him to call the magistrate to come down and post bail, he told me the magistrate did not come in until 11 the next morning. When I got to make my 1 phone call I called the magistrate and he came down and I wrote a check for bail.
The folks I really feel sorry for with all this new Driver license regulations are the ladies. they have to bring in every divorce decree and if widowed and remarried, the death certificate. Do yourselves a favor and start getting what you need and not wait until your license is expired....Drifter
