View Full Version : Pole top rescue
Not sure if this is the right place to start this. How many of you have had to do a real pole top rescue? Was it a different than when you practiced (more stuff on pole, both getting up & getting the man down)? what was the outcome? the reason I am asking is that seems to be the number 1 concern about fall restraint & like I have stated earlier in over 20 years it has never had to be performed at my place of work.
I havent . One was done a few months back because the guy on the pole got over heated and passed out ? Which is in itself a whole other topic so I wont go into it. If I had to do a real one, I probably would be called out and have to take what ever comes. If the pole had tons of crap on it I could get the man down a lot quicker and have a better chance at saving him.

Here we go again! You tried makin this point in the last big debate about this **** thing! Or are you bringin this up cause you like the fall arrest that much or cause you have a genuine concern for those of us who don't us it yet? If the first then great! KEEP IT! If the later I'll take care of myself and my coworkers who don't use it thank you! Accidents happen and I'm not willing to replace one safety rule if the possibility may exist it could negatively affect another!
If ya want to blow off pole top rescues cause you haven't performed one yet then I guess I'll stop usin any fall arrest at all cause I haven't fallen in a long time? Sh!t I don't need a hard hat cause no one has dropped anything on anyone lately! Safety glasses! COME ON! We don't need those grounds! No one else is out here! Haven't had some one get burned up from closin in an LCP without permission! Just slam it in!
HOW ABOUT COMIN UP WITH A BETTER DEVICE THAT WON'T LEAVE ANY ROOM FOR DEBATE WHETHER IT CAN BE USED OR NOT IN THE RARE OCCASION A RESCUE MAY NEED TO BE PERFORMED! OR PROPERLY TRAIN EMPLOYEES!!
Maybe safety's gotten a little better as far as guys gettin hung up on poles but that's no reason for assumin rescues are gonna be a thing of the past! What if places start loosin a guy a week like what was goin on just 10yrs ago? Then what? Nip it in the bud now!
Come up with a better device Buckingham , Miller, Bashlin, or who ever!!!

I had to do a pole top rescue 1 time about 15 years ago, we were pulling in bundled tree wire and it was an angle pole , beckett hung up in roller and lineman picked up on conductor instead of hitting roller with his hammer and it sucked his arm through the roller to his shoulder blade, lucky it did'nt rip it off, anyhow I got up there as quick as I could as my tools were right there at the base of the pole and I got him out of the roller and out of the bind he was in and lowered him to the ground where he was taken to the hospital, it all happened so fast I really did'nt even think about it until it was all over, I believe that in emergency situations your training or the lack thereof will take over.

I will have to agree with Lewy.. Training or lack thereof takes effect in the heat of the moment. I myself havent had to perform a pole top rescue except in annual certifications but I insist everyone on my job is qualified in it just in case.
I did have one rescue attempt on the ground and everything happend so fast I couldn't tell you how I went about everything so fast. The investigators were hounding me wanting to know how a first year apprentice (me at the time) knew to make the scene safe and carry out the rescue by the book. All I could say was thats what I was taught.
You never will know how one will handle a situation till the **** really hits the fan. So you train, train, train... Some folks will freak out and completly shut down. Some folks will react and do what they were trained. Its just one of them things where you wont know till its happening.

the bottom line here with this f#@*squezze is that if theres a pole top rescue to be performed and u arent good with it dont use the **** thing.
What happened to teaching guys to climb and what happened to teaching guys to be safe and i dont mean wrap them up in a bunch of f***in bubber and fall devices i mean actually teaching LINEWORK taking care of these new hands once they prove themselves making the prideful smart safe LINEMEN they should be...... if that dont get back to the way things are theres no telling what kind of **** "safetymen" are gonna come up with.... WE HAVE GOT TO TAKE THIS INTO OUR HANDS AND TEACH AND GUIDE!!!!

Was involved in a Pole top Rescue a few years back, during one of the Hurricane Restorations.....on 7620V......the guy was concious (sp), and everything went like clockwork...no one had to be told to do anything....got the guy down pretty fast, got medical on scene and he was transported to the hospital and lived to climb/work another day.......
NO BUCK SQUEEZE INVOLVED...........
