I'm talking hobbies, crafts, work, or something that might not be done by your gender. I'm grinning as I write this because for some reason I'm thinking some off the wall comment made by Big Clive might send me into giggles.

I've pretty much done some gender crossing in most things. But, nothing more than fixing or repairing things (fixing a flat tire/changing oil)that any other woman might do. Or sawing, welding, driving a tractor/combine, etc, etc.

I find that some females have done this. Maybe some it's not as common, but women that are either on their own, single parents, raised learning this, it's pretty common.

I honestly can't think of anything I've done or tried to do that might be considered a man's job that another female hasn't done. But, I'd really like to know is what a man has done that might be considered more of a "woman thing" or a woman's hobby.

Cooking doesn't count. Most men cook and have been cooking for a long time if they like it. Cooking with a woman's apron on, doesn't count either Clive. :D I'm picking on Clive, because he is pickable material.

So, name it guys. I'll start by saying my brothers learned to not only cook, but also cook and clean. To them, this is nothing. They don't have a problem with feeling non-manly. But, I tease them that they did learn how to sew and crochet. Sewing was in home ec class and crocheting is what they learned from my grandmother. 'Course they only got to "double" crochet, which isn't but two up on "single" and "chain"...not much. But, it's something!

Of course they got bored and found no interest, but nevertheless, I tease them about it.

So, lets hear what you guys have done or doing that is considered a female thing.

Cooking? It's not a woman's apron I need when I'm cooking. It's a full length leather blacksmiths apron and face visor. In reality, I only have a combination oven at home, and of that it tends to be just the microwave that gets used. I'm not very adventurous when cooking. That said, I can do "stuff" when I have to cook for others. Usually involving cans of soup and beans being put into a pot and stirred briefly.

I can however use a sewing machine. Not for making frocks or stuff like that, but for repairing pockets and overalls or even grafting extensions onto arms and legs of workwear to make them long enough to actually cover my larger than average limbs. Last sewing job was on a Hi-Viz jacket that had detachable arms that explosively detached in a way they weren't supposed to when I pulled the jacket on with vigour at work. The stitching that held the zips on was rubbish, so I re-did it with a somewhat tougher thread and really went over it a few times to do a more permanent job.

These are all tasks required when a man lives alone.

It's OK. They can be used for other things. I've got a chemical processing system in mine for making my prototype PCBs.

Can you build a fire without a woman to do it for ya?:D

HA! This is "you are a redneck if" story....just happened last night! The Boss has been doing some overtime on building a fire in our fireplace this winter. It's been the most we have ever used it in 8 yrs!

Anyway, he builds it and I'm to roast us some hotdogs on it. He didn't like how that was going, so the next thing I know we have a grill rack going with our hotdogs on it! Right in the fireplace! Oh man. I'm laughing, he's grinning, but they were good hotdogs! :D

Never a dull moment at our house!

Believe me, they've tried. I like the look of confusion on their faces when they don't get any response at all.

You are a tough man Clive. I figured claws sunk into your skin might sting a bit. :D

Ha ha I fixed my husbands truck heater. He had stupid paper clips trying to hold the cable in place that worked the heater control. I got tired of freezing my a&& off and replaced the cable myself. I used to like working on my car, changed the exhaust, power steering pump, alternator, belts, battery, spark plugs, attempted brakes only to have the spring almost knock my eye out. My dad used to make me help him fix everything and even got me my own timing light. Modern cars had to go mess it all up with their fancy wrenchs, computer chips, ect. I learned allot the hard way like put wood under the jack in the driveway on a hot day so it doesnt sink into the pavement and then you ruin the jack trying to get it out. I should have looked into being a mechanic...........thanks lost art............brought back funny memories.

If I didn't have two brothers that came along after me, I'd be close to learning like you Lizzy. But, my wonderful mother wanted me to be a lady/girl. And I was for the most part, but having younger brothers, it was hard to be one! :D

My father had the patience of Job and he did teach me the basics of using most equipment and how to maintain them, but you are right, you can throw that out the window on autos these days.

Years ago (1970's) Pitman bucket truck company had a demonstrator named Don Collins. Don was a good sized guy about 6'2" or so and maybe 250#.

He spent lots of time on the road demonstrating bucket trucks. To pass his evenings in the motel he loved to knit.

His daughter worked here at Chance in the engineering print room. She would wear sweaters and dresses that he had knit for her.

He must have thought she was still 13 from the sizes he used for her, but the guys sure didn't mind.

One word.........Everything.

I just want to switch for a week what is considered the gender roles. I would rather cut up a tree with a chain saw, split it (gas powered splitter) than do any type of house work. I will put on my head phones and mow the lawn while I get an awesome tan. I will dig the fence post holes with the John Deere tractor and come in and ask "Whats for dinner". I dont think the tractor is sexy unless my a$$ is in the seat! No I dont want to slow up and look at turkey or deer. I dont care how many antlers it has as long as you did not hit it with my truck. I would rather go shoe shopping.

I have done the mowing for years. If the boys have truck problems, I am the one they call cause dad has always been unavailable while at work. I've hung ceiling fans and made minor repairs around the house. Hang trail cameras, fill feeders, cut trees, hang stands...you name it. I would much rather do outside things than clean house. When hubby is working all the time, you just do what has to be done!
