I followed a link on one of the posts to a MySpace profile and then spent a while looking through various linemens profiles. A couple of things struck me as very different to the UK.

Music. Your choices are very rock/country/guitar as opposed to our more up-tempo stuff.

Comradeship. Many of the photo's show groups of buddies with their arms round each others shoulders. Very odd. Here in the UK you would be more likely to see the same buddies standing side by side with arms folded or down at the side with no physical contact at all.

Babies. Oh yeah, talk about family guys! You LOVE your babies and post pictures of them at every opportunity. Well I'm sorry, but they all look the same to me. :p

As for "Comradship",

What's wrong with hangin your arm around your buddys shoulder? Are you guys THAT hung up?:p
Seriously. You come to my door....If you're a friend, I'll shake your hand and do a "slap on the back" hug.

It just doesn't get done over here in the UK. That said I've just realised that there is a picture on my website which does indeed show a couple of work mates who are absolutely best friends, and one does indeed have his arm over the others shoulder.

My own gut reaction if anyone placed their arm on my shoulder would be to instinctively throw it off. Maybe I've just got poor social skills.

Clive, you will also see this amoung soldiers. I don't know about Brit soldiers, but you will see it amoungst American soldiers.

I've also seen grown men cry and I don't find it whimpy at all. I can't speak for the rest of the USA, but it prevails here in the deep south. And we think it's normal. http://www.avowners.com/forum/smileys/doh001.gif
