Remembrance Day, November 11

Yesterday my wife and I went to the cenotaph. I try to make it a habit on November 11. At 11:00, during the 1 minute of silence, there was a fly over of WWII war birds. Very dramatic.

Although I have always been aware that my freedom is thanks to those who left home and hearth in both WWI and II and Korea, and many of those paid with their lives, I realised it was much more than that.

My countrymen sacrificed 4 years in 1914 – 1918, 5 years in 1939 – 1945 and 3 years in 1950 – 1953 thier comfort at home so I could have a life where I have never had to do the same. Canadians are once again sacrificing their comfort and their lives in a foreign land to once again preserve my freedom. This Remembrance Day held a significant difference than any other for me. This is the first time the names of those Canadian soldiers’ who have given the ultimate sacrifice recently, in a new war, were added to the cenotaph in my life time. Also the names of the RCMP officers recently killed in the North while on duty, protecting our country, were read.

Yesterday was different for me. I hope others realised that our freedom is precious. It certainly is expensive.
