Hi Fella's,
Well our new work-place laws have come in and some rail workers have just be served the first big fines. They went out in support of a sacked shop steward and have been nailed by our new laws. 107 union members (CFMEU) have been given fines of betwwen $22,000 and $28,800 each. The rail project has been delayed quite badly due to a LOT of union actions and has been dubbed "the snail rail" but individual fines of this size are just outrageous.........

Sounds like Oz has a Reagan/Thatcher running or ruining the government? I’m still smarting from them 2 *******s and their bag of tricks.

That's scare tactics. At least they didn't threaten to jail them like they did here in UK for the lorry drivers when they protested at the ludicrous cost of fuel.

Fines like that are a genuine violation of human rights.

You have a very dangerous government at the moment. It's reminiscent of the way the English Conservative party single handedly brought the UK to it's knees.

Do what the Americans do and shoot your prime minister. :)

And they shot Reagan for sure. IRA narrowly missed Maggie in Brighton when she was Prime Minister. It ain’t much better in the UK.

Margaret Thatcher....... How could ONE woman do so much damage.

Now the UK's biggest export is fraud, and it's biggest import is cheap immigrant labour.

It's regretable that the Brighton bomb didn't kill the treasonous hag. It might have saved British industry. Still, look on the bright side. All her buddies and family made ****-loads of cash.

Really Squizzy.... If the Australians don't do something about their government now you will all pay the price in the near future.

what are these new laws about we are in the dark here .

The new laws are basically to break the unions up and remove collective bargaining doing away with compulsary awards and people getting individual agreements. Workplaces under 100 employees are really in it, their bosses can sack with out giving a reason coupled with being on an individual agreement their workforces are running scared. Places on the news have shown workplaces that are sacking longterm employees one day then trying to rehire them the next day at 30% less!
The Federal Government is liberal at the moment and hold the majority in the senate which has enabled them to pass what-ever laws they feel like. To all the wankers that voted for them they asked for it they had better vote Labor at the next federal election so that if Kim Beazerly delivers on his banter he will revoke all the work place reforms and bring back the dozens of workers rights that have been stripped.
What the rail workers did was participate in an "illegal strike" meaning that the industrial relations commission had ordered them back to work and they refused to go back.
The union bosses went down there and said(saw this on the news) "I am here to f#%king tell you guys to go back to f#%king work!" talk about not being able to take a hint. But these laws are draconian and going to make our lives difficult for some time to come. Starting to like little Jon Howard is trying to imitate Margerat Thatcher and the little prick is doing it......

Squiz, what did they violate specifically?

They violate the Australian ideals of a fair go and a fair days pay for a fair days work. They go as far as to reduce annual leave from 4 weeks to 2 weeks, if you want to tell managament that you don't like something you are likely to get the boot and have no real avenue to appeal their decision. To explain how far they have gone would take hours of typing which i hate so here is a link if you would like some reading and further info...

I would guess this is a pretty good reason for a tramp to avoid Australia. Maybe your government will hear the silence caused by the lack of skilled tradesmen not beating a path to your door.

Shortages equate to higher prices – Economics 101!

Hi Trampbag,
I would still come over here as the reforms have mainly hit smaller companies with less than 100 employees and as they are all fellow union members and members of our community they should be supported. Also we have a huge skills shortage here and tradesman of almost any trade are in short supply and the rates and conditions have been getting better and better as they can't afford to piss people off as they can't be replaced any time soon. So its actually quite the contray, I would say now is the best time to come over, 1000's of skilled migrants are coming in and getting some pretty good wages to boot.Electrians working fly in fly out are averaging over $120k p/a as a base rate, and some house wirers are getting $100k in the metro area. Linesman are getting (in the West) $24/hour to up over $33 an hour for metro work with higher rates for country and minesite work, I believe over in the Eastern States the pay rates are higher and New South Wales were all given an additional $6-$10 an hour to stop them going to work with higher paying contractors. Then the contractors have put their pay up to maintain the difference!

There's a high possibility that I'll be taking a trip to Australia early next year. (work permitting). I'd like to see Perth and Sydney. (Yeah, two extremes.)

Is hotel accommodation fairly affordable?

Squizzy

Yeah the hotels range in price but the exchange rate is well and truely in your favour, let us know when and we will have to check out the a few bars (hopefully not from the inside of a cell!).Alot of guys that work around the country say that Perth is the best place to live and work...
