I've searched and read most of the posts on shiftwork. My question is this: What do you think of a 2 crew yard going to 4 10's? One crew Mon-Thur and the other crew Tue-Fri. Sounds to me that they are giving the company 10 hours of coverage for free. 2 hours per day that, working a 5-8 day, would be overtime.Any thoughts or comments?

Our crews that work on what we call AWP's- Alternate Work Patterns which is the same 4 days 10 hours are on a higher rate of pay to compensate for what would normally be overtime hours....

Thats a hard one, I am a union contractor and I work 4 tens. For me I would much rather work that than 5 eights. If the company is forcing you to do it I am sure they doing it to benefit them. They are probably saving money on overtime. So if you usually get overtime that might end some of it. That is how I would look at it.

It's not the 4 10's that bother me, its the 50 hour's of coverage for the company on a 40 hour check.

Solidarity...
This is already the case of our local 57 brothers in Utah. I think we all will look at new owner Rolling Back Wages and Busting Unions. We will refer to Mid American as The Walmart of Utilities. Pass that name on...

You just lost about 30 to 40 % of your annual wage. Company is laughing all the way to the black bottom line as far as unscheduled OT is concerned.

Yup, no matter what color they paint the fence...they just got somebody to work overtime for straight time wages period. Lots of brothers fought the good fight with no quarter asked for and none given...think about them before agreeing with this! Yes 4/10's are great!...but don't give-up the 40 hourwork week battle in the process. woody

So what do you think of these guys that are all gung ho for the shift work? They want to break down conditions without even getting anything back from the company. Unfortunately, I'm the minority in this fight. I even have friends that work for non-union companys that said they would not even consider doing this. I'm so mad right now, I could...............I just hope it dosen't trickle down to other yards. At least I wont have blood on my hands.

I wish these hands were aware of the history of the forty hour work week and the many battles fought before we got into this great trade. The IBEW was at the fore-front of the forty hour work week and overtime. 659 I agree with you... we are a minority (union and union benefits); lets hope some of them realize that they are giving up one of the most cherished things that was fought for... and for what reason? Ask em that question... also hope the hall and stewards are involved. Good-luck, brother. woody

All our "alternative work scheduals" ie 4 10's 9 80's etc. are all negotiated with our Union. They are not forced. Actually our company wants everyone on 5 8's. They also want some other stuff that's bull$h!t but don't they all.
