The company has been doing this for thirty years that I know of. We have hundreds of poles with metal splints on them that were put on them in the 80's. They were supposed to get 10 more years out of the pole. Now all the tops are rotten and we change them out on trouble or storm work. Heck, they should be able to harden the system with all the money they have saved just from splinted poles.

After Wilma last year, there were a couple federal inspectors hanging around the hotel in the evenings and visiting us on the job during the day. Questions were asked as to whether we felt broken poles, etc. were strictly hurricane damage or due to lack of maintenance. We were told not to answer their questions. But, being the typical tramp, waves are made to be created. Almost every pole we changed out was completely rotted at ground level, or tops rotted off, or splints at the butt. What do you think I told them? "Looks like a total lack of maintenance, not what you'd find in the Northern states". Hey brothers, be careful on FPL property and ALWAYS test your poles before you climb!

You want to come over here and see how many poles we have steeled. Tens of thousands of them, go to change out one and when the crane pulls it out the butt stays in the ground or drops off when lifted. Just to top it off they just changed the pass mark on wood rot. The old standard used to be 70% good wood and 30% rot before the pole would be scheduled for change, now its 50/50. They are buying time by steeling the poles and all the ones that were due for change are now passed. Its going to bite use on the ass in a big way!
